Titled "Gateway to Discovery," the design symbolizes Florida's history of exploration, from early settlement to modern space travel.

Key Features of the 2004 Florida State Quarter:

Design & Theme: The reverse, designed by United States Mint artist Don Everhart, represents the state’s theme "Gateway to Discovery," combining a 16th-century Spanish galleon—representing the 1513 landing of Ponce de Leon—with a 21st-century Space Shuttle.

Imagery: In addition to the ship and shuttle, the coin features a strip of land with Sabal palm trees, which is the state tree.

Inscriptions: The coin features the words "Florida," "1845" (statehood year), "2004" (year of mintage), "E Pluribus Unum," and "Gateway to Discovery".

Production: A total of 481,800,000 coins were produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, with additional proof versions, including 90% silver, produced at the San Francisco Mint.

Obverse: The obverse (heads) side features the standard portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on all 50 state quarters.
