Michigan
Issued Date: January 26, 2004

Description: Released on January 26, 2004, as the 26th coin in the 50 State Quarters Program, the Michigan quarter highlights the state's "Great Lakes State" nickname. The reverse features a detailed, textured outline of the state (upper and lower peninsulas) surrounded by the five Great Lakes. The design was created by Donna Weaver.

Key Features and Details:

Reverse Design: A detailed map of Michigan's two peninsulas and the outline of all five Great Lakes.

Inscriptions: "Michigan", "Great Lakes State", and "E Pluribus Unum".

Obverse Design: Standard portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, with "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and "Quarter Dollar".

Significance: Michigan is the only state that borders four of the five Great Lakes, a key reason for the design choice.

Release Information: It was the first of five state quarters released in 2004.

Mint Locations: Produced at both Philadelphia (P) and Denver (D) mints.

The design is meant to represent Michigan's, and the region's, deep connection to the largest freshwater system in the world.
