Description: The 2003 Maine State Quarter, the 23rd in the series, features a scenic reverse design of the Pemaquid Point Light lighthouse atop a rocky coast with a three-masted schooner (resembling the Victory Chimes) sailing in the background, representing Maine's maritime heritage. Released on June 2, 2003, the coin also bears the inscription "1820," the year Maine joined the Union.

Reverse Side: Features the Pemaquid Point Light on a granite cliff, a schooner, and the statehood date "1820".

Obverse Side: Features the standard portrait of George Washington, with "United States of America," "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "Quarter Dollar".

Composition: Primarily copper-nickel clad.

Rare Variations and Mintages

"In Cod We Trust" Error: A notable,, valuable error variant exists where a die crack makes the "G" in "GOD" look like a "C".

Mint Marks: Coins were produced with "P" (Philadelphia), "D" (Denver), and "S" (San Francisco - proofs).

Silver Proofs: 90% silver versions were produced at the San Francisco mint.

Background: The design was chosen to symbolize Maine's rocky coastline and historic seafaring industry. The Pemaquid Point Light, built in 1827, is a famous landmark in New Harbor.
