Return To Index
Drescription: The 2004–2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series, authorized to commemorate the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, featured four distinct, one-year-only reverse designs. The series introduced new imagery for the first time in 66 years, including the "Peace Medal," "Keelboat," "American Bison," and "Ocean in View" designs, while updating the Thomas Jefferson portrait in 2005.
Key Designs and Details:
2004 Peace Medal: Features clasped hands (friendship) and a crossed pipe/hatchet.
2004 Keelboat: Depicts the boat used by the expedition to travel the Missouri River.
2005 American Bison: Honors the wildlife encountered, designed by Jamie Franki, with a new right-facing profile of Jefferson.
2005 Ocean in View: Features a coastal scene with the inscription "Ocean in view! O! The joy!", referencing William Clark's journal.
Additional Features: Obverse Changes: The 2004 coins used the traditional left-facing portrait, while 2005 coins featured a new, closer portrait of Jefferson by Joe Fitzgerald.
"Liberty" Inscription: In 2005, the word "Liberty" was rendered in Jefferson's own handwriting.
